Tips for Daily Denture Care

If you have dentures or are interested in them, there are a few rules of thumb about denture care to keep in mind. At Fresh Pond Dental, we always advise our patients with new dentures to keep these steps in mind.

Following them will help maintain that attractive smile and your good health.

  • Safety: Always remember to handle your dentures with care. When cleaning or working with them, try placing a towel or large bowl of water beneath your dentures, or you may want to lean over the sink after filling it with water. This will ensure that if they fall, their landing will be as safe as possible.
  • Overuse: As with any part of your body, overuse of dentures can cause your gums to chafe and even bleed. To avoid this, do not wear your dentures while sleeping. This will eliminate the tendency to grind your dentures, which can damage them. In addition, it will give your gums time to rest.
  • Rinsing: Part of good oral care for dentures includes rinsing. After you eat, you should always rinse them with water. At night and any time you are not wearing your dentures, be sure to soak them in cool water or an over-the-counter cleaning solution. You do not want them to dry out. Many commercial denture rinses will help maintain the color and condition. However, they won’t remove the plaque and leftover residue from daily use.
  • Cleaning: As you would with standard oral care of your teeth, you need to brush your dentures each day to remove plaque and food particles. To do this, brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. Do not use toothpaste. Many commercial toothpastes are too abrasive and can damage dentures. Also, be careful not to bend or adjust any attachments.

Remember these simple tips. Incorporating them into your routine will help keep your teeth looking and feeling their best for the next five to seven years. In addition, at Fresh Pond Dental, we recommend that our patients come in for six-month checkups, as they did for dental cleanings of their teeth. This allows our dentists in Cambridge to inspect dentures for needed adjustments, check their condition, and assess whether the patient’s gums are becoming irritated. We also check for gum disease, which should be treated immediately.
