Not So Wise Wisdom Teeth

They are third molars that emerge in your late teens and beyond. It is important to note that their presence can compress your other teeth. This often causes overcrowding and forces your permanent teeth out of alignment because your mouth does not have enough room for the additional wisdom teeth to grow. If the wisdom teeth cannot break through your gums due to a situation like this, you will have impacted wisdom teeth.

What can happen as a result of impacted wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth can be painful and cause further oral damage, such as:

  • Infection beneath the gums, sometimes resulting in a painful cyst.
  • Damage to your other permanent teeth and bone.
  • Misalignment of your permanent teeth due to overcrowding.
  • Your wisdom teeth erupting through the gum at odd angles, leaving the top of the tooth facing backward, forward, or even to either side.
  • Partially breaking through the gum, resulting in a flap of skin around a wisdom tooth that can trap food and germs. This can cause irritation and infection.

How do you fix impacted wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth will need to be removed, and if the process has progressed too far, other steps will have to be taken to fix the subsequent problems.
