Dental Hygienist

One of the most important members of our staff at Fresh Pond Dental is our certified dental hygienist. Every patient who comes to us for their dental health care will at some point require the professional dental services of our dental hygienist.

The dental hygienist is the person who specializes in prophylaxis, which is professional cleaning of the teeth and gums in order to treat and prevent periodontal disease such as gingivitis. Proper oral hygiene is vital to your dental health, and our dental hygienist ensures that not only are you educated regarding home care for your teeth but you also receive regular routine cleanings and deep mouth scaling when needed.

Your hygienist will first perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums utilizing a probe to determine the level of plaque buildup between your teeth, on the roots and beneath the gums. By using a scaler and a pick the hygienist can remove plaque and tartar that could otherwise lead to gum disease. An ultrasonic instrument uses vibrations to assist in removing debris from the teeth. In the event that tartar has made its way beneath your gums, your hygienist may advise that you return for a more in-depth cleaning, or a full mouth dental scaling. This deep teeth cleaning involves numbing the gums so they can be pushed back to fully clean the tooth root without inflicting any pain.

Your dental hygienist may also apply dental sealants to teeth where a potential cavity is indicated. The job of the dental hygienist is largely to provide preventative oral health care. By keeping your teeth and gums free from plaque and tartar buildup, your dental hygienist at Fresh Pond Dental can help to prevent gum disease and gingivitis, thus better assisting you in maintaining a healthy and happy smile.
